m.12 May 1833, Leon, Cattaraugus County, New York.

d.[Her gravemarker is worn, but appears to say she died "18 May 1870], (Leon, Cattaraugus county, New York?). Death records in Leon, NY start at about 1881 due to fires. Obituaries were rare this early; Eber Franklin, Sophia's father, died in 1876 and only has a short paragraph primarily mentioning that he was one of the last surviving, War of 1812, veterans and nothing else in the way of biographical information.

buried Treat/Union Cemetery, Leon, Cattaraugus County, New York.

Another paper pertaining to his service in the war in Leon lists parents as "Eber and Patty Kimble." (Terry Olson has a copy of the Civil War file, death record and obituary and photos from the cemetery. Susan Daniel is the prime source of information on Andrew, as she is a descendant of Andrew and Aurilla Franklin. We all benefit greatly due to Susan's professional research abilities and indefatigable work ethic. Vivian Sayles is a descendant of Andrew and has much information on Andrew, including a photo of Andrew and one of Susan his third wife. Terry has copies of some of Vivian's files on the family. Vivian is now deceased but was living with one of her children either in Idaho or California or Oregon before she died. I still hope to make copies of photos in possession of one of her children. There is a Civil War photograph that was in possession of Diana Turner which could be any of the Franklin boys in this family that served in the Civil War

Benjamin Franklin (m.Mary Rideout)
b.26 Aug 1820, Riga, Genesee (now Monroe) County, NY

Benjamin lived in Richmond or New Richmond P.O., Richmond Twp, Crawford County, PA from at least 1860-1880. When Eber died (probate 1877), he is said to be in Townville (Steuben Twp), Crawford Co, PA.

The death index shows the dates for Benjamin but has no further information about the parents' origins to aid in our quest. Benjamin died of cancer, which he had for 6 months prior to death. If there is an obituary, it would be located at the Crawford Historical Society, 411 Chestnut St., Meadville, PA.

Deb Golley is a descendant of Lyman and has shared her research and photographic abilities, taking photos of Eber and Martha's gravemarkers in the Fairview Cemetery in Leon- which is a feat just to find the place to begin with!- Thanks Deb!

Lovina Sherman (m.Joseph Byron Sherman)

newspaper death notice, and loads of other information about his ancestor. Lovina is most likely buried with husband Joseph B. Sherman and his parents, but the only marker indicating the location is for Joseph. Lovina may be the woman in the photograph on this page. It is a photo which was in the posession of Diana Turner who also has a photo of Lovina's son James Wells Sherman and family. She may be one of the women on the porch in the photo of Joseph Sherman with his horse and carriage- http://www.geocities.com/terry253mpls/Josephphotos.html

http://www.geocities.com/terry253mpls/Franklinpicnic.html

No mention of parents in Civil War file noted, no death record contained therein. (Terry has Civil War file) There is a Civil War photograph that was in possession of Diana Turner which could be any of the Franklin boys in this family that served in the Civil War
http://www.geocities.com/terry253mpls/GeorgeorEber.html.

Joanna Milks (m.Freeman Milks). b.24 July 1834, Conewango, Cattaraugus County, New York

m.abt 1855, Freeman Milks; m.2, 1911, or after, Edwin Parkman Battle
d.after 20 January, 1920, and before October 1924 (when Edwin P. Battle returned to Illinois), probably Pomfret, NY.

According to a letter in possession of Terry Olson's family written by Joanna's nephew Albert Sherman, writing to his brother James Wells Sherman in Angora, MN, from Bradford, PA. Albert writes of Joanna: "I have had one letter from Aunt Joanna since she was married then she had a bad foot with a corn and was afraid she would loose her foot. she has a man to take care of now I suppose she is poorer than ever. I have not heard from South Dayton lately." 18 October 1915.

Searching for Joanna's in the area, I found a Joanna married to Edwin Parkman Battle.  Married after 1911. Edwin came from Chicago, a widower, but was formerly born and raised in Massachusetts. They were living in Pomfret, NY,  during the 1920 census (20 January). Joanna's brother Lyman Franklin had just moved to Pomfret when he died in 1905, her sister Aurelia died there in 1912, and her brother Harrison died there in 1926, so it makes sense for Joanna to also be in Pomfret in 1920. Update: Joanna is used as a witness on Aurelia's son Myron Marcellus Francis' Passport Application, 20 September 1919, going by the name "Joanna M. Battle," including her signature as such, and stating that Myron is her nephew.

Her photo from the History of Dayton, NY is seen here: http://www.geocities.com/terry253mpls/JoannaFreeman.html. Terry finds facial traits very similar to his mother in Joanna in this photograph.

Deb Golley looked up some information on Joanna and writes on 6/26/01 4:22 PM:

I checked today on Joanna Milks but I don't find a marriage record in Cattaraugus County. I checked the index from 1908 to 1920. I did find in the deed when she sold her property [245 Mill Street, formerly the Sherman residence] to Marshall and Alice Baker. She sold it October 11, 1906. I can copy that deed if you want. She was still Joanna Milks in 1911 when she sold a small piece of property in South Dayton.

George Washington Franklin (m.Diana P. Russell)
b.27 March 1838, Leon, Cattaraugus County, New York

m.1860
d.1 July 1863, Gettysburg, PA. No death record contained in the Civil War file, no mention of parents noted. (Terry has Civil War file) There is a Civil War photograph that was in possession of Diana Turner which could be any of the Franklin boys in this family that served in the Civil War
http://www.geocities.com/terry253mpls/GeorgeorEber.html.

(Diana Turner has loads of information about her ancestor, including a Franklin family Bible record. I have some copies of Harrison's family information as well. There are photos of Harrison and Elizabeth here as well http://www.geocities.com/terry253mpls/harrisonelizabeth.html). Probably not many of you know this, but Harrison's wife Elizabeth Darling has a nephew named Jay Norwood Darling, who is more commonly known as Ding Darling, a very famous political cartoonist. There is even a State Park named after him in Iowa http://www.inhf.org/dingdarling04.htm, [see also some of his work http://www.inhf.org/ding_cartoon.htm] and a Wildlife Refuge in Florida http://gorp.away.com/gorp/resource/us_nwr/fl_ding.htm

Thus far what we have is mostly some information about their family in the book "Early Lewises of Northern New Jersey," which includes some birth dates for some of the Kimbles- Benjamin and some siblings, including Nathan and Hannah. The dates don't appear to be exactly correct necessarily, but are close enough to appear to be the same individuals we are researching. Click the link below to view pertinent pages from the book. The birth dates are on the second page.

Early Lewises of Northern New Jersey

Ralph Kimball Potter, the author of "Early Lewises of Northern New Jersey," is Benjamin Kimble's son, Almon's grandson. His mother was Melissa, Almon's daughter. Considering that Ralph studied the family, and lived in New Jersey, this should be carefully examined.  In 1930, when the census was taken, he was, in fact, living in Sussex County, New Jersey, in Hopatcong. In 1942, he was in Madison, Morris County, New Jersey. He died in Lakewood, Ocean County, New Jersey and is buried in the same county in Toms River at the Ocean County Memorial Park. He died, 2 October 1978.
