Burlington County - Surrogate's Office
The court in Burlington was established
in the Province of West Jersey in 1681; the boundary between Burlington and Gloucester counties was first set up in 1692.
The county was re-formed by the union of the first and second Tenths of West Jersey on 17 May 1694. Portions
of the original Burlington County became Hunterdon (1714) and Mercer (1838) counties.
Recording of wills
and estate inventories at the county level began in 1804. Orphans Courts were established in 1785. Consult the Secretary of
State page linked below for original estate records for the 1660s-1900 period.
The State Archives' holdings vary from county to county. Consult the Collecting Policy for additional information about our accessioning guidelines.
